10 Best Countries for Global Professionals 2013

Relocating for work to capitalize on global opportunities is a growing trend but where does Canada fit into this international professional landscape? I’ve explored where Canada ranks in various global lists like the best country to livesmartest countries, the happiest countries, the  most peaceful countries, the most sustainable countries, the friendliest countries, the most charitable countries, the most prosperous countries, the best countries for quality of life, the best countries for business, the top countries for life expectancy, the best countries for working women, the best country for world travel & tourism, the best countries for human development, the top countries for Clean Capitalism, the best country for child well-being, the best countries from social progress, the best countries for higher education, the most popular countries, the least corrupt countries, the best countries for paid vacation days and the countries with the best reputation. Today I’ll be adding to this list with the 10 best countries for global professionals from the Global Professionals on the Move 2013 report.

Hydrogen Group based this report on “the results of a major online survey that ran during November 2012 and attracted 2,146 responses from professionals in 90 different countries working largely across the legal, finance, business transformation, technology, oil and gas, power, life sciences, mining and trading and advisory sectors.” According to this data, the 10 best countries for global professionals are:

  • 1. 10-best-countries-professionals-on-the-moveUnited States of America – The percentage of people who would like to work there: 24%. The USA’s overall score increased by 11% from the 2012 edition of this list.
  • 2. United Kingdom – The percentage of people who would like to work there: 13%  and their score increased by 4% from 2012.
  • 3. Australia – The percentage of people who would like to work there: 13% and their score increased by 4% from 2012.
  • 4. Singapore – The percentage of people who would like to work there: 9%  and their score increased by 3% from 2012.
  • 5. Canada – The percentage of people who would like to work there: 8% and their score increased by 3% from 2012.
  • 6. Switzerland – The percentage of people who would like to work there: 6% and their score increased by 2% from 2012.
  • T-7. France – The percentage of people who would like to work there: 5% and their score increased by 1% from 2012.
  • T-7. Hong Kong – The percentage of people who would like to work there: 5% and their score increased by 1% from 2012.
  • T-7. UAE – The percentage of people who would like to work there: 5% and their score increased by 2% from 2012.
  • 10. Germany – The percentage of people who would like to work there: 4% and their score increased by 1% from 2012.

These statistics hold much more weight when you take into account that there are nearly “200 million people across the globe living and working abroad, more than double the figure 25 years ago.”

Canada seems to be fairly competitive when it comes to attracting workers globally which is important. This is the type of information that can have a very real impact for businesses as it encourages developing strategies “on how to successfully attract and retain the best global talent.” Also, for the (potential) employees relocating, “it explores not just the challenges to moving abroad, but the overwhelming long term career advantages that an international move delivers.” The Global Professionals on the Move 2013 report contains some really interesting info – definitely worth a read.
