Today we’ll be looking at the 10 most charitable countries from the World Giving Index (WGI) 2013.

“The aim of the World Giving Index is to provide insight into the scope and nature of giving around the world.”

Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), a leading UK charity, is the publisher of the WGI and it’s primarily based on data collected from the Gallup World Poll throughout the calendar year of 2012. The data was collected from 135 countries around the globe and more than 155,000 people were interviewed. “In most countries surveyed 1,000 questionnaires are completed by a representative sample of individuals living across the country.” To establish scores, data was collected based on three key factors: helping a stranger, donating money and volunteering time to help. Based on the WGI research, the 10 most charitable countries are:

  • 10-most-charitable-countries-world-giving-index-nonprofit-fundraising1) United States of America – WGI score: 61%. Helping a stranger score: 77%. Donating money score: 62%. Volunteering time score: 45%.

  • 10) Sri Lanka – WGI score: 48%. Helping a stranger score: 54%. Donating money score: 45%. Volunteering time score: 46%.

I wrote about the 2012 edition of the WGI and it’s interesting to note that, since the 2012 Index, the USA moved from 5th place to 1st in 2013 and Canada moved from 3rd in 2012 to 2nd in 2013. Other notable findings from the World Giving Index (WGI) 2013 included:

  • Women are more likely to give money than men
  • Global youth are driving the rise in volunteering
  • The average % of people donating money, volunteering time and helping a stranger increased in 2012 over 2011 despite a decline in the rate of growth of the global economy from 4.0% to 3.2%
  • Helping a stranger is the key to the rise in giving to charity
  • Levels of giving remain below those recorded five years ago
