As a Toronto call centre, we’re proud of our home city and all that it offers. We’re also interested in how we compare on the world’s stage and I’ve explored this topic in posts like the best country to live, the smartest countries, the happiest countries, the  most peaceful countries, the friendliest countries, the most charitable countries, the best countries for quality of life, the best countries for business, the top countries for life expectancy, the best countries for working women, the best country for child well-being, the best countries for higher education, the most popular countries, the least corrupt countries, the countries with the best reputation, the best countries for ease of doing business, the best countries for starting a business, the best country for business, the best country for customer satisfaction, the best countries with the most competitive economies, the best countries for entrepreneurship, the most sustainable countries, the best countries to grow old, the best country brand, the best countries for business, the most sustainable countries, the most charitable countriesthe most prosperous countries, the countries with the highest minimum wage, the safest countries, the best countries with the highest average salary, the best countries for social progress, the best countries for working women, the best countries for mothers, the best countries for average life expectancy at birth, the most popular countries, the most gay friendly countries in the world, the most peaceful countries, the best countries for giving back, the best countries for global professionals on the move, the most tax competitive countries and the most innovative countries. Today, I’m adding the 10 most liveable cities from the Global Liveability Ranking and Report 2014 to this list published by the Economist’s research arm the Economist Intelligent Unit (E.I.U).

Toronto, Ontario Canada

When compiling this list the E.I.U graded more than 140 cities using 30 factors under categories such as stability, safety, healthcare, educational resources, infrastructure and culture & environment. In the end, each city was given a total score out of a possible 100. Based on the data collected, the 10 most liveable cities, according to the E.I.U, are:

  1. Melbourne, Australia – Score: 97.5
  2. Vienna, Austria – Score: 97.4
  3. Vancouver, Canada – Score: 97.3
  4. Toronto, Canada – Score: 97.2
  5. Calgary, Canada – Score: 96.6
  6. Adelaide, Australia – Score: 96.6
  7. Sydney, Australia – Score: 96.1
  8. Helsinki, Finland – Score: 96.0
  9. Perth, Australia – Score: 95.9
  10. Auckland, New Zealand – Score: 95.7

Seven of the top ten cities were located in either Australia or Canada. In fact the top 10 “tend to be mid-sized cities in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density.” This is mainly because larger cities are victims of their own success, as crime and other issues arise and lower their scores.

According to this study, liveability has declined in 51 places and improved in 31 over the course of the past 5 years. Overall though the top 10 has remained the same since 2011 and though scores fluctuated, only 20 cities changed position in the last year. Given the current political climate, the majority of those whose scores changed had decreased due to mounting insecurity.

We’d like to congratulate Vancouver, Toronto, and Calgary for earning their spots in the top 10.
