Today, I’ll be exploring the list of the top 10 countries for longest hours worked around the world compiled by Canada MSN based on information from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The mission of the OECD is “to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world” and the countries included in this list have signed the Convention on the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Based on this ranking the 10 top countries for longest hours worked around the world are:

  9. Turkey – Average annual hours worked per employee: 1,855.06. Average hours worked per week: 48.9. Productivity: US$28.90 to the country’s GDP for each hour of work.
  10. Russia – Average annual hours worked per employee: 1,789.92. Average hours worked per week: N/A. Productivity: US$24 to the country’s GDP for each hour of work.

Canada ranked in the middle of the pack with 1,710 annual hours worked per employee and a productivity of US$51.80 to the country’s GDP for each hour of work. This was less than the number of hours worked per American employee annually which was 1,790 hours with a productivity of US$ 61.60 to the country’s GDP for each hour of work. The OECD average was 1771 hours worked so Canada came considerably below the average.

One of the reasons why the average number of hours worked is so high has to do with employees taking work home with them and how technology has made it easier to stay connected. It’s interesting to note that hours worked is not necessarily related to overall productivity.
