Today, we’ll be featuring the 10 most expensive cities to live in Canada according to lists compiled by both msn.ca and Reader’s Digest which were based on the average cost of purchasing a home in each city. According to these lists, the 10 most expensive cities to live in Canada are:

  1. Vancouver, B.C – Vancouver remains the most expensive city in Canada to buy a home. The average price of a home here rose to $819,384 in December, up 4.3 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.
  2. Toronto, Ontario – The average price of a home in Toronto rose to $556,602 in December, up 7 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.
  3. Victoria, B.C – The average price of a home in Victoria rose to $498,716 in December, up 4.4 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.
  4. Calgary, Alberta – The average price of a home in Calgary rose to $452,968 in December, up 3.1 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.
  5. Hamilton, Ontario – The average price of a home in Hamilton-Burlington rose to $387,922 in December, up 4.6 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier
  6. Edmonton, Alberta – The average price of a home in Edmonton rose to $359,479 in December, up 3.2% compared with the same period a year earlier.
  7. Ottawa-Gattineau, Ontario – The average price of a home in Ottawa rose to $349,479 in December, up 2.2 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.
  8. Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – The average price of a home in Saskatoon rose to $340,608 in December, up 3.7 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.
  9. Montreal, Quebec – In Quebec’s largest city the average house costs $318,982.
  10. Fort McMurray, Alberta – One of the things that makes Fort McMurray really special is “the city’s breathtaking view of the Northern Lights” from October to March.

While each of these major city centers offer a lot in the way of commerce, arts and culture the price of housing may be a deterrent for new residents or businesses thinking of relocating or expanding into the area as housing prices are indicative of the cost of living and doing business.
