Kitchen Aid’s Cook for the Cure Culinary Showdown to Benefit Breast Cancer Research

CSR business values are becoming more and more important to both consumers and businesses alike. Building on the connection with consumers is a great way to positively raise a brand’s profile and improve customer loyalty. Home appliance company Kitchen Aid is doing just that with the launch of their first ever Cook for the Cure Culinary Showdown being held at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto on December 7th, 2013.

Kitchen Aid has a history of CSR business initiatives that benefit breast cancer charities and, as such, this event will benefit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF). Since 1986, the CBCF have contributed over $274 million towards breast cancer research grants and were able to give over $26 million in grants across Canada in 2012 alone. The research they fund is making a difference in lives of those affected by the disease by supporting research, health education and advocacy programs.

The Cook for the Cure Culinary Showdown, will be hosted by Food Network star Tyler Florence. Also participating in the event are noted, well-respected Canadian Chefs Chuck Hughes, Lynn Crawford, Mark McEwan, Vikram Vij and Corbin Tomaszeski. The night will be emceed by reality TV star, actor, and founder of the new brand The Gourmet Dad, Dean McDermott.

On the day of the Culinary Showdown there is a Celebrity Chefs School that will be held from 10 am – 3 pm. It is here where participants will learn “trade secrets on food prep, knife skills, cooking methods, and more.” At 6:30 there is a cocktail reception and then the showdown will begin at 7pm. “This extraordinary challenge gives culinary enthusiasts the opportunity to fundraise for a chance to cook alongside celebrity chefs in the type of team cooking challenge normally reserved for TV.”

In order to attend the event one has to pay a registration fee of $75.00 and then fundraise for the rest. Depending on how much participants raise there will be gifts and experiences available to them:

  • $250-$499 – receive a signed Culinary Showdown apron.
  • $500-$999 – receive an autographed cookbook from a celebrity chef.
  • $1,000-$2,499 – attend the Culinary Showdown, enjoy a three-course meal and have the opportunity to win incentive prizes.
  • $2,500+ – participate in the Celebrity Chefs School, attend the Culinary Showdown, enjoy a three-course meal, win incentive prizes, and compete to be one of the top 50 fundraisers.
  • Top 50 Fundraisers earn all of the rewards of raising $2,500 AND compete on stage alongside celebrity chefs. They will also receive a branded apron, a chef’s hat, and a gift from KitchenAid.

If you are able to raise over $6,000, you can bring a guest to the showdown. The fundraising deadline is 4pm on December 6th 2013.

This event helps motivate the participants as they can have a once in a lifetime experience by being an enthusiastic fundraiser while supporting and raising awareness for a worthy cause. Combining culinary events with fundraising has proven popular in previous years with the Chef’s Challenge with Bobby Flay held in 2011 and the Chef’s Challenge with Guy Fieri held in 2012.

The Cook for the Cure Culinary Showdown is an excellent example of a CSR business initiative which is in-keeping with a brand the likes of Kitchen Aid as they are bringing people together around food and working towards a noble goal.
