Today we’re looking at the 10 best cities for opportunity from PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers)’s Cities of Opportunity 6 report. We have previously written about the 4th edition and 5th edition of this same report.
“This year, our foundational study includes 30 cities, which we select using three fundamental criteria: cities are capital market centers, represent a broad geographic sampling, and comprise both mature and emerging economies. The cities are measured across 10 indicators constructed with a robust sampling of 59 variables, each of which has been chosen because it is: relevant; consistent across the sample; publicly available and collectible; current; free of skewing from local nuances; and truly reflective of a city’s quality or power.” The 10 indicators included intellectual capital and innovation, technology readiness, city gateway, transportation and infrastructure, health, safety, and security, sustainability and the natural environment, demographics and livability, economic clout, ease of doing business and cost. Though the categories are broad in scope they were “constructed with a robust sampling of 59 variables” to give a comprehensive overview of each city. Based on this data, the 10 best cities for opportunity are:
- London – 2014 Score: 1,290. 2012 ranking: 2
- New York – 2014 Score: 1,235. 2012 ranking: 1
- Singapore – 2014 Score: 1,230. 2012 ranking: 7
- Toronto – 2014 Score: 1,215. 2012 ranking: 3
- San Francisco – 2014 Score: 1,211. 2012 ranking: 6
- Paris – 2014 Score: 1,196. 2012 ranking: 4
- Stockholm – 2014 Score: 1,191. 2012 ranking: 5
- Hong Kong – 2014 Score: 1,156. 2012 ranking: 8
- Sydney – 2014 Score: 1,153. 2012 ranking: Wasn’t in the top 10.
- Chicago – 014 Score: 1,133. 2012 ranking: 9
About Toronto the report says, “two other cities renowned for their exceptional quality of life, Toronto and San Francisco, rank fourth and fifth, respectively, confirming their reputation.” Toronto also fared well in the clout category because “[they know that] “clout” is not a product of brute force but of perpetual management, development, and, especially, resourcefulness.”
Unfortunately, Toronto has taken a slight dip since the last report but I’m confident it will bounce back. Toronto is a first class city deserving of a positive international reputation.
