10 Most Generous Countries from the World Giving Index Ranking

The World Giving Index (WGI) 2014 creates a unique opportunity to evaluate how people give around the globe. Being a Canadian call centre that specializes in fundraising services, we were keen to explore how our country compared on the world’s stage when it came to charitable generosity. Today, we’ll explore the 5th edition of the World Giving Index (WGI) ranking by looking at the 10 most generous countries – this includes generous with both time and money.

Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), the publisher of the WGI, is an international charity based out of the UK with offices in six contents. Their mission is to “motivate society to give ever more effectively and help transform lives and communities around the world.” The WGI is primarily based on information from the Gallup’s World View World Poll “which is an ongoing research project carried out in more than 140 countries in 2013 that together represent around 94% of the world’s population (around 4.96 billion people).” They asked a variety of questions pertaining to everyday life in order to get a comprehensive overview of giving in each country.

There were three pillars of giving considered in determining these rankings: donating money, volunteering time and helping a stranger. These categories were used to help give a final WGI score to each country and according to the data collected, the 10 most generous countries are:

• 1.    Myanmar – WGI score (%): 64
• 1.    USA – WGI score (%): 64
• 1.    Canada – WGI score (%): 60
• 4.    Ireland – WGI score (%): 60
• 5.    New Zealand – WGI score (%): 58
• 6.    Australia – WGI score (%): 56
• 7.    Malaysia – WGI score (%): 55
• 7.    UK – WGI score (%): 55
• 9.    Sri Lanka – WGI score (%): 54
• 10. Trinidad & Tobago – WGI score (%): 54

It should be noted that there has not been much movement between the 2013 and 2014 top 10 list of countries. What helped Myanmar tie the United States for 1st place was a very high score when it came to donating money (91%). We would like to congratulate all Canadians for their philanthropic efforts and their pursuit of helping others.
