Canada has always been known for being peacekeepers, and being a Canadian call centre, we are proud of our country’s reputation. For this reason we wanted to see how Canada measures up when it comes to being a “peaceful nation.” In the past, we’ve explored Canada’s place on the world’s stage in posts like the best country to live, the smartest countries, the happiest countries, the most peaceful countries, the friendliest countries, the most charitable countries, the best countries for quality of life, the best countries for business, the top countries for life expectancy, the best countries for working women, the best country for child well-being, the best countries for higher education, the most popular countries, the least corrupt countries, the countries with the best reputation, the best countries for ease of doing business, the best countries for starting a business, the best country for business, the best country for customer satisfaction, the best countries with the most competitive economies, the best countries for entrepreneurship, the most sustainable countries, the best countries to grow old, the best country brand, the best countries for business, the most sustainable countries, the most charitable countries, the most prosperous countries, the countries with the highest minimum wage, the safest countries, the best countries with the highest average salary, the best countries for social progress, the best countries for working women, the best countries for mothers, the best countries for average life expectancy at birth, the most popular countries and the most gay friendly countries in the world. Today we’re looking at the 10 most peaceful countries in the world according to Vision of Humanity’s Global Peace Index 2014.
Vision of Humanity is a “strong proponent of the need to further study, advocate and act on peace,” and their goal is to bring balanced information “that is positive and solution based.” They thrive to help bring about the kind of peaceful future people wish to live. When compiling this list they used “22 indicators of the existence of absence violence or fear of violence. The indicators were originally selected with the assistance of an international panel of independent experts in 2007 and have been reviewed by the expert panel on an annual basis. ” These indicators were used to evaluate 162 countries which roughly covered 99.6% of the world’s population. Based on the data collected, the 10 most peaceful countries in the world, according to Vision of Humanity, are:
- Iceland – Score: 1.189
- Denmark – Score: 1.193
- Austria – Score: 1.200
- New Zealand – Score: 1.236
- Switzerland – Score: 1.258
- Finland – Score: 1.297
- Canada – Score: 1.306
- Japan – Score: 1.316
- Belgium – Score: 1.354
- Norway – Score: 1.371
As we all know peace is hard to achieve and the findings of this index support that claim; as “since 2008, 111 countries have deteriorated in levels of peace, while only 51 have increased.”
The United State’s score was amongst those that have dropped; however, North America remained the second most peaceful area (behind Europe) because of Canada’s score. It is comforting that Canada has been able to maintain its image of a peaceful compassionate nation in a world that grows ever more uncertain.
