As a corporation, Miratel is proud of its CSR business values and we’re always happy to celebrate other like-minded companies. We’ve explored this topic in posts such as best Corporate Citizens in Canada 2012, the Top Organizations for Employee Engagement, the Greenest Canadian Employers, the Top Diversity Employers in Canada, the Top Canadian CSR Business ListCanada’s Top Employers for 2013,  the top Canadian boards according to gender representation, the Top Canadian Boards According to Visible Minority and Aboriginal Representation, the Top Sustainable Companiesthe best corporate citizens list, the  top countries for Clean Capitalism, the Green Business Leaders for 2013, the 10 Green Business Leaders, the B Corp Best for the World List, the top foreign corporate citizens in Canada, the most reputable companies, the most visible companies with the best reputation, the top 10 North American retailers for Carbon Productivity and the best green global retailers. Today I’ll be adding to this list with the 10 most sustainable companies from the 10th annual Global 100 clean capitalism report released by Corporate Knights (CK), a media, research and financial products company focused on quantifying and animating clean capitalism drivers for decision makers.”

global-100-most-sustainable-companiesDetermining corporate sustainability is difficult as there is “no single, universally accepted definition of “corporate sustainability”; publicly traded companies are exceedingly complex institutions, often spanning multiple geographies and industrial sectors.” When researching the report CK only used information that had been publically disclosed as they believe in transparency “in both the sustainability and investment worlds.” The methodology used begins when “all companies from the Global 100 starting universe that make the Global 100 Shortlist are scored on (a maximum of) 12 KPIs. In essence, these 12 KPIs serve as selection criteria for the Global 100 Index.” It is important to note that companies were only measured on KPI’s “that have determined to be “priority indicators” for their respective GICS Industry Group. This ensures that companies are only scored on metrics that are, relatively speaking, widely disclosed in their industry.” Based on this research, the 10 most sustainable companies from CK’s Global 100 annual clean capitalism report are:

  1. Westpac Banking Corp. Country: Australia. Industry group: Banks. Score: 76.5%
  2. Biogen Idec Inc. Country: USA. Industry group: Pharmaceuticals. Score: 75.3%
  3. Outotec OYJ. Country: Finland. Industry group: Capital Goods. Score: 74.2%
  4. Statoil ASA. Country: Norway. Industry group: Energy. Score: 74%
  5. Dassault Systemes SA. Country: France. Industry group: Software & Services. Score: 74%
  6. Neste Oil OYJ. Country: Finland. Industry group: Energy. Score: 69.2%
  7. Novo Nordisk A/S. Country: Denmark. Industry group: Pharmaceuticals. Score: 68.8%
  8. Adidas AG. Country: Germany. Industry group: Consumer Durables & Apparel. Score: 68%
  9. Umicore SA. Country: Belgium. Industry group: Materials. Score: 67.8%
  10. Schneider Electric SA. Country: France. Industry group: Capital Goods. Score: 66.5%

Though Canada didn’t have any companies in the top 10, they did make quite the showing when it came to the countries with the 2nd most companies on the list. We’ll be delving further into the 10th annual Global 100 clean capitalism report next week when we’ll look at the countries of origin of the companies included on the list as a whole. This different take on the list helps give a clearer picture of sustainable business practices around the globe.

Hopefully CK’s commitment to transparency in sustainability is something that will have an impact on other businesses and we’ll see more new (Canadian) names on the list in 2015. Kudos to all that made the list.
