When we came across the Good Country Index (GCI), we naturally wondered how Canada fared and we are featuring the 10 best countries for giving back from this extensive study. The CGI is authored by Simon Anholt and Dr. Robert Govers with support from several organizations. The purpose of the CGI is to “measure what each country on earth contributes to the common good of humanity, and what it takes away.”
Click image to go to Good Country Index overall rankingsThe methodology used to create this Index included evaluating 125 countries “on 35 reliable datasets which track the way that most countries on earth behave: there are five of these in each of seven categories:” science and technology, culture, international peace and security, world order, planet and climate, prosperity and equality and finally, health and wellbeing. The purpose of this is to get a well-rounded view of how much each country gives back. Based on this research, the 15 best countries according to the CGI are:
- Ireland: The highest score Ireland received was 1st place in prosperity and equality.
- Finland: Finland’s highest score was 3rd in prosperity and equality.
- Switzerland: 2nd place in prosperity and equality was Switzerland’s highest score.
- Netherlands: The Netherlands tied for their highest score with 2nd place finishes in both culture and health and wellbeing.
- New Zealand: Their highest indicator score was 7th place in planet and climate.
- Sweden: 3rd place in planet and climate was Sweden’s highest individual score.
- United Kingdom: A 1st place finish in science and technology was the UK’s highest individual score.
- Norway: Norway’s highest individual score was 4th place in planet and climate.
- Denmark: Denmark’s highest score was actually a tie as they came in 5th in both world order and health and wellbeing.
- Belgium: A 1st place finish in culture was Belgium’s highest score.
- France: France’s highest score was 10th in planet and climate.
- Canada: A 2nd place showing in planet and climate was Canada’s highest individual category score.
- Germany: Germany’s highest ranking was 1st place in the category world order.
- Austria: There was a tie when it came to Austria’s highest scoring category as they received 2nd place score in both science and technology and world order.
- Australia: A 6th place finish in planet and climate was where Australia achieved their highest single category score.
The GCI aims to “start a global discussion about how countries can balance their duty to their own citizens with their responsibility to the wider world, because this is essential for the future of humanity and the health of our planet.” This research highlights that countries are now being held to a higher global standard because “it’s no longer enough to provide prosperity, growth, justice and peace to one population alone: the international consequences of every action must be considered.” I couldn’t agree more.
