20 Top Celebrities Gone Good of 2012 Part 2

This is the second part of a 2-part post I began on Wednesday that featured the celebrities that placed in spots 20-11 in the DoSomething.org 20 Top Celebs Gone Good in 2012 list. As I mentioned in Part 1, celebrity involvement in nonprofit fundraising and cause awareness initiatives is something I write about often as I believe it’s important to promote the good they do given the added influence they carry with their fans today because of digital and social media. Why not celebrate the positive? We began covering this same list in 2011 (Part 1 and Part 2) and what we like most about it is that it is more about action and effort than cheque-writing (which is also important though – don’t get me wrong). So let’s continue with the top 10:

  • 10) Ian Somerhalder: The Vampire Diaries star is well known for being an eco-advocate winning the greenest international media luminary for 2012 award. His Ian Somerhalder Foundation educates people to have a positive impact on the planet. Ian is also a huge supporter of The Trevor Project.
  • 9) Selena Gomez: The former Disney darling, popstar and actress works with children’s hospitals across the United States. Beyond that her “second-annual UNICEF charity concert raised $200,000 for kids in Africa.
  • 8) LeBron James: The basketball star did more in 2012 than bring an NBA championship to Miami but he still keeps connected to his hometown of Akron, OH. His foundation “Wheels for Education program provides support and school supplies to 300 underprivileged elementary schoolers”. He also supported BoostUp.org by making a PSA to encourage at-risk youth to stay in school.Pink-PETA-nonprofit-fundraising
  • 7) Pink: The pop-rock star has always been about making a statement and this year it was all about her amazing work with PETA and being an advocate for shelter adoption, anti-fur and animal rights
  • 6) Robin Roberts: The co-anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America, wanted to shine a light on bone cancer after her own diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome (pre-leukemia). “She teamed up with BeTheMatch.org to spread awareness about bone marrow donation. Roberts’ 30-second TV spot on “Good Morning America,” her radio PSA, along with several ads saw over 44,000 people join the registry.
  • 5) Justin Bieber: The Canadian popstar dropped three spaces from last year when he was second on the list. He donated $100,000 so homeless children could go to school and his Believe Charity Drive raised over $1 million. This is in addition to his work with Pencils of Promise. Also, he donated $1 from every ticket sold from his Believe tour to charity and the proceeds from four NYC area shows went to Hurricane Sandy relief.
  • 4) Lady Gaga: Mother monster fell three spots after being first on the list in 2011. This year she donated $1.2 million to launch her charity The Born This Way Foundation that combats bullying and supports LGBT youth. Gaga also donated $1 million to the American Red Cross for Sandy relief.
  • 3) Channing Tatum: People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive and star of Magic Mike along with his wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum helped to “raise millions for the Rainforest Foundation. They also support Angels for Animals and sponsor abused farm animals through Gentle Barn.”taylor-swift-rfk-award-nonprofit-fundraising
  • 2) Miley Cyrus: The singer and actress was eighteenth on last year’s list. Cyrus supported Saving Spot! Dog Rescue, which finds dogs in kill shelters homes. She even went barefoot to promote TOMS’ One Day Without Shoes challenge. Additionally, she worked with Save The Music Foundation, the Starkey Hearing Foundation, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
  • 1) Taylor Swift: The country cross over star, best known for her active love life, was ranked twentieth on the 2011 list. She is the youngest person ever to receive the Ripple of Hope Award from the Robert F. Kennedy Center. Swift also donated $4 million to the Country Hall of Fame Museum and made numerous other donations as well.

Some of the most popular stars of 2012 were featured on this list – some repeats from last year and a few new surprises. By using their fame and reach through social media, these celebrities are drawing much needed funds and attention to these worthy nonprofits and inspiring their fans to do good as well.
