Lady Gaga Unveils Born Brave Bus at Kickoff of US Tour
Lady Gaga has become a pop culture icon due to her avant-garde style, on stage theatrics, incredible talent and dedication to empowering youth towards self-acceptance. Gaga has tremendous influence on her fans, known as Little Monsters, and it is not something she takes lightly. She has made a conscious decision to use this influence for good and most recently ranked fourth on the 20 Top Celebrities Gone Good of 2012 for her contributions towards nonprofit fundraising and awareness.
In 2012, I wrote about Lady Gaga creating her Born This Way Foundation (BTWF) together with her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, “to foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated.” The endeavour was inspired by the “love who you are” message of Gaga’s smash hit Born This Way but has since become a youth movement with the Foundation “dedicated to creating a safe community that helps connect young people with the skills and opportunities they need to build a kinder, braver world.” Gaga partnered with The California Endowment, MacArthur Foundation and The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University to start the BTWF.
While 2012 saw the birth of the BTWF, 2013 heralds its first major project, the Born Brave Bus launched in conjunction with the North American leg of the“Born This Way Ball” tour. The Born Brave Bus is a pre-concert tailgate experience for fans – a place where “youth under 25 can hang out, participate in creative and interactive activities, meet resources in [their] community, and bond with other youth – just like [them] – who are ready to make a difference and start building a kinder, braver world.” The Born Brave bus launched on January 14 and Mother Monster herself attended this ground breaking event. Though the bus is part of a fun pre-concert tailgate Gaga tweeted that, “At the Born Brave Bus, you have access to professional private or group chats about mental health, bullying, school and friends.” From 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on the night of each Born This Way Ball concert, the bus will be open to the general public. Those wanting to participate in the Born Brave Bus can check out the bus’s schedule and pre-register online. You do not need a ticket to the concert to visit the bus. There is no smoking, alcohol, drugs, weapons, bullying or fighting on the Born Brave Bus and if any of these conditions are violated, the items will be discarded and those involved will not be permitted to participate and will be asked to leave.
“The Born Brave Bus is a kind, brave, healthy, accepting, loving and fun place!”
Some of the national and local partner organizations who are helping to create this tailgate bus and are committed to the creation of a “kinder, braver world,” include: National Association of School Psychologists, National Mentoring Partnership, Mentoring USA, The Trevor Project, GLSEN, National Council for Behavioral Health, Campus Pride and Youth Service America.
This bus is a way for the foundation to reach out and make a difference in people’s communities. Showing youth who are struggling with self-doubt or who are victims of bullying that there is help out there can have a tremendous effect on their self-esteem and on their future lives. Lady Gaga is setting herself apart form her contemporaries with her commitment to her fans and the hardships they face by reaching out and taking action to make a tangible difference that will leave a positive and lasting impact on their lives and the world.
