18 Top Foreign Corporate Citizens 2012
There are many lists that rank companies and their contributions to their CSR business values. In the past, I have featured quite a few here on the Miratel blog as we continue to draw inspiration from their efforts. Some of the 2012 lists I have covered include the Top 50 Canadian CSR Business List, Top Diversity Employers in Canada 2012, 55 Greenest Canadian Employers, 30 Top Green Organizations in Canada According to Employee Engagement, the Top 500 Global Green Rankings and most recently the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada. Today, I’m adding to this list with the Top Foreign Corporate Citizens for 2012.
The list was compiled and published by Corporate Knights. Corporate Knights “is a media, research and financial products company focused on quantifying and animating clean capitalism drivers for decision makers.” Along with their informative and insightful website and magazine they have also launched Corporate Knights Capital. Corporate Knights Capital is “a division of the leading publishing and investment research company [Corporate Knights], is [a] source for objective, data-driven ‘clean capitalism’ ratings for over 2000 companies globally.”
The Top Foreign Corporate Citizens represent corporations with “substantial operations in Canada who are leading the way on corporate citizenship and have their main headquarters in another country.” I have delved into other Corporate Knights listings of companies before and have found their method to be comprehensive and far reaching. To be on this list the companies must also “be listed on the Financial Post 500, and rank among the top 10 per cent of 4500 global companies according to the Global Sustainability Research Alliance [GSRA].” For those unfamiliar with the GSRA, it is one of the “world’s largest sustainability research consortiums.”
According to GSRA and Corporate Knights the 18 top Foreign Corporate Citizens are:
- Honda Canada Inc. from Japan
- IBM Canada Ltd. From United States
- Toyota Canada Inc. from Japan
- Hewlett-Packard Co. from United States
- Nissan Canada Inc. from Japan
- Siemens Canada Ltd. From Germany
- Lafarge Canada Inc. from France
- RSA Canada Group from Great Britain
- Cisco Systems Canada Co. from United States
- BASF Canada from Germany
- Kia Canada, Inc from South Korea
- L’Oréal Canada Inc. from France
- SAP Canada Inc. from Germany
- Direct Energy from Great Britain
- Xerox Corp. Inc. from United States
- Johnson Controls LP from United States
- ING Bank of Canada from Netherlands
- Aviva Canada Inc. from Great Britain
These companies come from diverse industries spanning from the automotive sector and IT industries to banking and beauty products. The diversity on this list is indicative of the increasing importance of being a good corporate citizen. Conscious consumerism is a growing value as more and more customers want to support corporations they feel are “doing good” with their profits. Allowing consumers to shop their values with their everyday purchases will benefit everyone involved.
It is great to see business being conducted in a responsible and transparent manner from such an impressive list of companies. The accountability and integrity presented by these market leaders will lead the way for others.
