I wrote about #proudtoplay last week and in that post I mentioned that Toronto is hosting the 1st North American held World Pride Day. Toronto is an inclusive, diverse city so it was no surprise that our hometown was bestowed the honour of celebrating the LGBTTIQQ2SA community on the world’s stage. We can’t help but wonder how Toronto will measure up as we have often explored how our city or country compares in posts like best country to livesmartest countries, the happiest countries, the  most peaceful countries, the friendliest countries, the most charitable countries, the best countries for quality of life, the best countries for business, the top countries for life expectancy, the best countries for working women, the best country for child well-being, the best countries for higher education, the most popular countries, the least corrupt countries, the countries with the best reputation, the best countries for ease of doing business, the best countries for starting a business, the best country for business, the best country for customer satisfaction, the most gay positive country, the best countries with the most competitive economies, the best countries for entrepreneurship, the most sustainable countries, the best countries to grow old, the best country brand, the best countries for business, the most sustainable countries, the most charitable countriesthe most prosperous countries, the countries with the highest minimum wage, the safest countries, the best countries with the highest average salary, the best countries for social progress, the best countries for working women, the best countries for mothers and the best countries for average life expectancy at birth, the most youthful cities, the best cities to live for opportunity,  the best cities to live in Canada, the world’s cleanest cities, the most popular countries and the best cities for opportunity. When compiling this list the Richest used the findings of Pew Research Centre surveys, which “asked citizens in 39 countries a simple question: whether or not homosexuals should be accepted in society.” They also took into account when or if same-sex marriage had been legalized. According to this data, the 10 most gay friendly countries in the world are:

  1. Spain: 88% of those polled answered the Pew question favourably helping Spain earn the top spot.
  2. Netherlands: The Netherlands was the first country to legalize same-sex marriage; and a “2013 [Pew survey] showed that over 85% of the Dutch support same sex marriage and adoption.”
  3. Belgium: Belgium was the second country to legalize same-sex marriage. Also, “62% of Belgians polled believe that all the countries in the Union should be made to adopt same-sex marriage laws.
  4. Canada: Same-sex marriage has been legal in Canada since 2003; also 80% of Canadians answered the Pew survey in a positive manner. Not mention Toronto hosts one of the largest pride parades.
  5. Germany: Though Germany have no law regarding same-sex marriage on the books, 87% of people responded positively to the Pew study.
  6. Argentina/Brazil Tie: The only South American countries on the list and were the first and second countries in Latin America to allow same-sex marriage.
  7. Australia: Australians are very accepting as 79% responded positively to the survey. Why they didn’t rank higher was because they don’t have a law concerning same-sex marriage.
  8. Iceland: Iceland legalized same-sex marriage in 2010, and last year an astounding 10% of the population attended its pride festival.
  9. The Philippines: Though the Philippines has yet to legalize same-sex marriage, 73% of people surveyed were accepting of homosexuality according to a Pew research survey.
  10. South Africa: Though South Africa has a history of intolerance that is quickly changing. In fact, they legalized same-sex marriage in 2006.

It should be noted that Canada was the only North American country to make this list. We’re particularly proud of Canada as we’ve always supported the LGBTTIQQ2SA community and have celebrated Pride in posts like What Does Pride Mean to You?Pride Toronto is a time to Celebrate Who We Are, Where We’ve Been and Where We Are Going4 Nonprofits Advancing the LGBTT2SQI Community and Toronto #WorldPride Month Kicks off with #ProudToPlay.
