10 Best Cities for New Immigrants in Canada

Now we’re looking at the best places for new immigrants in Canada in 2014 released by MoneySense, “Canada’s leading personal finance magazine and leading personal finance website.”
The methodology had a total of 101 points available in a variety of categories each with assigned point values “depending on the importance of the category.” To determine the best place for new immigrants, the points were shifted “to emphasize services and conditions for immigrants.” Categories included: walk/ride to work, transit, weather, population growth, unemployment, housing, household income, discretionary income, household net worth, crime, sales tax, income tax, doctors per 1,000, health professionals, doc off, university, college, culture, proximity to an airport, language diversity, immigration population, affordable rent and rental vacancies. The categories were placed in the following groups: commuting, wealth, taxation, culture, weather, housing/renting, amenities, demographics, crime and health care. Based on MoneySense’s ranking, the best places for new immigrants in Canada are:
- Ottawa, Ontario – Immigration as percentage of population: 20.4. Overall 2014 ranking: 4th
- Burlington, Ontario – Immigration as percentage of population: 16.4. Overall 2014 ranking: 5th
- Saanich, British Columbia – Immigration as percentage of population: 17.6. Overall 2014 ranking: 14th
- Brossard, Quebec – Immigration as percentage of population: 35.6. Overall 2014 ranking: 38th
- Brandon, Manitoba – Immigration as percentage of population: 14.7. Overall 2014 ranking: 42nd
- Winnipeg, Manitoba – Immigration as percentage of population: 21.0. Overall 2014 ranking: 19th
- Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – Immigration as percentage of population: 13.7. Overall 2014 ranking: 13th
- North Vancouver, British Columbia (City) – Immigration as percentage of population: 30.2. Overall 2014 ranking: 28th
- Calgary, Alberta – Immigration as percentage of population: 25.4. Overall 2014 ranking: 2nd
- Vancouver, British Columbia – Immigration as percentage of population: 44.4. Overall 2014 ranking: 39th
