Today, we’ll be adding the top 10 cities from Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel: Top 10 Cities to this list.
In the over forty years Lonely Planet has been in existence they have become the “world’s most successful travel publisher.” Lonely Planet’s “team of travel experts, authors, commissioning editors and selected members of our travel community” crafted this Best in Travel 2014 list which included best cities and they also broke down travel into many categories so there was something for everyone. Based on this list, the 10 best cities are:
- Paris, France – Paris is reborn according to Lonely Planet and part of that is they dealt with their congestion problem by changing “1.5km of former expressway on the Seine’s Right Bank [into] walkways and cycleways.”
- Trinidad, Cuba – Trinidad’s rich culture is what helped earned them a spot on this list.
- Cape Town, South Africa – It was Cape Town’s natural beauty and that they are the “World Design Capital for 12 inspirational months” that landed them in third place.
- Rīga, Latvia – Lonely Planet feels that Rīga has earned “the long-deserved honour of being named the European Capital of Culture” and that helped earn them forth place.
- Zürich, Switzerland – Hosting the European Athletics Championship helped Zürich make this list.
- Shanghai, China – Their new redesigned metro system went from three-lines in 2000 to “third-longest network in the world.” It is this innovation and expansion that earned them a spot on this list.
- Vancouver, Canada – Natural beauty and a culture that supports many and varied outdoor activities is what helped earn Vancouver seventh place.
- Chicago, Illinois, USA – Architecture and culture helped Chicago make this list.
- Adelaide, Australia – It is refurbishment, culture and natural beauty, which earned them ninth place.
- Auckland, New Zealand – “New Zealand’s biggest and most cosmopolitan city” is something Lonely Planet feels people need to experience and that was why the city finished tenth.
This list highlights how innovation, redesign and making the most of natural resources helps to attract tourists and businesses alike. Congratulations to Vancouver for making the list. Here’s hoping we see Toronto in the top 10 for 2015.
