Today we’ll be adding the 10 best companies to work for in Canada released by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers.
This list was created to recognize “fast-growing companies in Canada that offer tremendous career advancement opportunities together with leading-edge employee perks and benefits.” The employers on the list were chosen using eight criteria: physical workplace, work atmosphere & social, health, financial & family benefits, vacation & time off, employee communications, performance management, training & skills development and community involvement. In alphabetical order, the 10 best companies to work for according to this list are:
- Aecon Group Inc. – Head Office: Toronto, ON. One of the reasons they made this list was because they make “employer contributions to a defined contribution pension and matching RSP” plan.
- Golder Associates Ltd. – Head Office: Calgary, AB. They are one of the top employers because they help employees become owners of the company though a “share purchase plan and reward hard work through profit-sharing and year-end bonus programs.”
- Nuance Communications Canada Inc. – Head Office: Montréal, QC. One program that helped them make the list was “Nuance University” which offers online training programs to employees. They also offer up to $3,000 in subsidies for employees to keep their skills current.
- OpenText Corporation – Head Office: Waterloo, ON. They made the list because they help employees with their work-life balance by offering “flexible hours, shortened and compressed work week options and telecommuting.”
- Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. – Head Office: Saskatoon, SK. One reason they made the list was that they offer employees paid time off to volunteer with charitable organizations.
- Shell Canada Limited – Head Office: Calgary, AB. In addition to helping employees with work-life balance, Shell also provides “employees with up to three paid days off each year to volunteer with their favorite charities.”
- TD Bank Group – Head Office: Toronto, ON. There are many reasons TD made the list and one of them is that they worked with the “University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management to develop the Rotman Back to Work program for women who have been out of the workforce for over eight years — and operates the in-house “Back to Business” rotational work program for women returning to work.”
- Technip Canada Limited – Head Office: St. John’s, NL. One reason they made the list is that they offer “ongoing employee development with tuition subsidies for job-related courses, subsidies for professional accreditation and a variety of in-house and online training options.”
- Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. / TMMC. Head Office: Cambridge, ON. They offer employees a “flexible health plan, employees can reinvest unused health credits into a health spending account for additional coverages, take as a cash bonus or invest into an RRSP plan.”
- West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. – Head Office: Vancouver, BC. One reason they are a top employer is because they encourage “employee development through tuition subsidies for job-related courses, in-house apprenticeship opportunities and subsidies for professional accreditation.”
These companies illustrate that you can be a large, growing company and still care to foster a healthy corporate environment. We’d like to congratulate the companies that made this list and hope they inspire others to create programs that value their employees.
