10 Best Countries for Donating Money According to Giving Index
Fundraising services are Miratel’s core competence so we were particularly interested in the results from Charities Aid Foundation‘s (CAF) World Giving Index (WGI) 2013. Being Canadian, we are also generally keen to explore of how our country compares on the world’s stage and we have done this in areas such as best country to live, smartest countries, the happiest countries, the most peaceful countries, the friendliest countries, the most charitable countries, the best countries for quality of life, the best countries for business, the top countries for life expectancy, the best countries for working women, the best country for child well-being, the best countries from social progress, the best countries for higher education, the most popular countries, the least corrupt countries, the countries with the best reputation, the best countries for ease of doing business, the best countries for starting a business, the best country for business, the best country for customer satisfaction, the most gay positive country, the best countries with the most competitive economies, the best countries for entrepreneurship, the most sustainable countries, the best countries to grow old, the best country brand, the most youthful cities, the best cities to live for opportunity, the best countries for business, the most sustainable countries, the most charitable countries and the most prosperous countries.
The WGI is primarily based on information from the Gallup’s World View World Poll and “includes data from 135 countries across the globe that was collected throughout the calendar year of 2012” from approximately 1,000 questionnaires. Donating money is one of the categories used to determine a countries overall WGI score and the 10 best countries are listed below:
- 1. Myanmar – Donating money score (%): 85
- 2. United Kingdom – Donating money score (%): 76
- 3. Malta – Donating money score (%): 72
- 4. Ireland – Donating money score (%): 70
- 4. Thailand – Donating money score (%): 70
- 6. Netherlands – Donating money score (%): 69
- 7. Canada – Donating money score (%): 68
- 8. Australia – Donating money score (%): 67
- 8. New Zealand – Donating money score (%): 67
- 10. Hong Kong – Donating money score (%): 63
- 10. Iceland – Donating money score (%): 63
- 10. Indonesia – Donating money score (%): 63
You’ll notice that the United States, while featured in the top 10 countries overall, is not featured when it comes to donating money.
Interestingly since 2009 women have been more likely to donate money than men. In 2012 “28.7% of women in a typical country give to charity in a typical month, 0.9 percentage points ahead of the equivalent figure for men (27.8%).”
Another observation made by the WGI is that older people tend to give more; most likely due to having more disposable income than their younger counterparts. However, that gap is getting smaller, as “since 2008 the average percentage of the over 50s donating money has fallen by 3.3 percentage points, but the fall for those aged 15-24 is only half as great, at 1.7 percentage points.”
All of the top 10 countries have a score of over 60% which means that 60% of people in these countries donated money in the month prior to being surveyed. This shows that compassion and willingness to help support charities are a concern for the majority of citizens globally.
