Today’s 10 happiest countries ranking is from Healthways and Gallup’s State of Global Well-Being: Results of the Gallup-Healthways Global Well-Being Index, the “most proven, mature and comprehensive measure of well-being in the world.” This Index gauges how people perceive their well-being. This was tabulated by taking into account more than 133,000 surveys conducted in 135 countries. They were able to measure well-being by using 5 key elements: purpose well-being, financial well-being, social well-being, community well-being and physical well-being.
According to the data collected, the 10 happiest countries are:
- Panama – Score: 61%
- Costa Rica – Score: 44%
- Denmark – Score: 40%
- Austria – Score: 39%
- Brazil – Score: 39%
- El Salvador – Score: 37%
- Uruguay – Score: 37%
- Sweden – Score: 36%
- Canada – Score: 34%
- Guatemala – Score: 34%
“Each element of well-being is important on its own, but the elements are also interdependent and well-being is more than the sum of the elements,” Gallup officials said in a statement. “That only 17 percent of residents in the 135 countries and areas surveyed are thriving in three or more elements underscores how most of the world is struggling to achieve high well-being.” This illustrates just how complex the pursuit of happiness can be around the world. Indexes such as this one serve to shine a light on the areas that need improvement. “Measuring well-being gives leaders a unique perspective on where their populations are and where they can be — information that is vital to inform well-being improvement strategies.”
