Today I am adding to this list with the 10 happiest countries in the world from the 2015 World Happiness Report, a landmark survey of the state of global happiness published by Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). The hope of the report is to encourage governments at every level to measure and improve their people’s happiness.
A rapidly increasing number of national and local governments are using happiness research in their search for policies that could enable people to live better lives,” the report says. “Increasingly happiness is considered a proper measure of social progress and goal of public policy.”
When compiling this list they used data from some 158 countries and measured them using the following six factors: GDP per capita, perception of corruption, generosity, social support, freedom and healthy life expectancy. Each country received a score on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 representing the best or happiest life. Based on the data collected, the 10 happiest countries are:
- Switzerland – Score: 7.587
- Iceland – Score: 7.561
- Denmark – Score: 7.527
- Norway – Score: 7.522
- Canada – Score: 7.427
- Finland – Score: 7.406
- The Netherlands – Score: 7.378
- Sweden – Score: 7.364
- New Zealand – Score: 7.286
- Australia – Score: 7.284
European countries dominated the top 10 of the list; however, once you move further down the list the geography of the countries becomes more diverse.
When it comes to North American countries Canada was the highest scoring country and the only one to make top 10 with Mexico ranking 14 with a score or 7.187 and the United States ranking 15th with a score of 7.119.
Congratulations Canada – I like to think we’re pretty happy 🙂
