Today, we’ll be featuring the 10 most liveable global cities according to the Location Ratings for expatriates published by ECA International, “the world’s leading provider of knowledge, information and technology for the management and assignment of employees around the world”. When they compiled this list they looked at some 450 locations around the world to form an assessment of the “overall quality of living”. The purpose of this study is to assist companies with “establishing appropriate allowances to compensate employees for the adjustment required when going on international assignment”. When considering this they looked at several factors including “climate, availability of health services, housing and utilities, isolation, access to a social network and leisure facilities, infrastructure, personal safety, political tensions, and air quality.” Based on the data collected, the 10 most liveable global cities for expats are:
- 1. Toronto, Canada
- 2. Dublin, Irish Republic
- 3. Copenhagen, Denmark
- 3. Zurich, Switzerland
- 3. Ottawa, Canada
- 4. Vancouver, Canada
- 7. Bern, Switzerland
- 8. Stockholm, Sweden
- 9. Seattle, USA
- 10. Boston, USA
Depending how a city rates in any criteria could impact the compensation package offered. While each of these major city centers offers a lot in the way of commerce, arts and culture there are many factors that come into play when designing compensation packages.
It is very impressive that three Canadian cities made the top 10 of this list – more than any other country. The Vice President of ECA International New York, Michael Witkowski, said “Good air quality, solid infrastructure, decent medical facilities, low crime and health risks have contributed to Toronto topping the global ranking for quality of living for American assignees.”
