10 Most Prosperous Cities 2014

We are always curious to see how our city (and country) measures up globally in areas like best country to live, the smartest countries, the happiest countries, the  most peaceful countries, the friendliest countries, the most charitable countries, the best countries for quality of life, the best countries for business, the top countries for life expectancy, the best countries for working women, the best country for child well-being, the best countries for higher education, the most popular countries, the least corrupt countries, the countries with the best reputation, the best countries for ease of doing business, the best countries for starting a business, the best country for business, the best country for customer satisfaction, the best countries with the most competitive economies, the best countries for entrepreneurship, the most sustainable countries, the best countries to grow old, the best country brand, the best countries for business, the most sustainable countries, the most charitable countries, the most prosperous countries, the countries with the highest minimum wage, the safest countries, the best countries with the highest average salary, the best countries for social progress, the best countries for working women, the best countries for mothers, the best countries for average life expectancy at birth, the most popular countries, the most gay friendly countries in the world, the most peaceful countries, the best countries for giving back, the best countries for global professionals on the move, the most tax competitive countries, the most innovative countries and the most liveable cities. Today we’ll be looking at Toronto Region Board of Trade’s Scorecard on Prosperity, which ranks the most prosperous cities around the world.

2014 marks the 6th edition of the Toronto Board of Trade’s ranking and the highest standing Toronto has achieved to date. When compiling this listing the “the Board commissioned The Conference Board of Canada (CBoC) to develop a scorecard on prosperity for the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), benchmarking the CMA against 23 metropolises around the world.” In the end, they used the same methodology from the previous report, which involved measuring each city based on 33 indicators to get a comprehensive look at each city and how Toronto compared. Based on the data collected, the most prosperous cities are:

1. Paris, France
2. Calgary, Alberta, Canada
3. Toronto, Ontario, Canada
4. Oslo, Norway
5. London, United Kingdom
6. Stockholm, Sweden
7. Seattle, Washington, United States
8. Sydney, Australia
9. San Francisco, California, United States
10. Boston, Massachusetts, United States

For the past four years Paris has held their 1st place ranking while Calgary has maintained 2nd place after being 4th in 2012. Overall the list showed modest changes as 8 of the top 10 remained the same.

Looking deeper into Toronto’s score, we were 8th in economy earning a B rating, yet we scored 3rd with an A rating for labour attractiveness. This illustrates that Toronto is still able to appeal to workers and businesses, which will help the economy in the long run. Overall, it is encouraging to see that Toronto is able to remain a competitive global city and that its future looks bright.
