10 Most Sustainable Companies in Canada 2015

We have previously featured the 15 most sustainable global companies from  Corporate Knights (CK) G100 The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations study and today we will delve into the 10 most sustainable Canadian companies in 2015 from this same report. CK is a Toronto-based “media, research and financial products company focused on quantifying and animating clean capitalism drivers for decision makers.”

The methodology used for this report is extremely detailed; “All publicly traded companies with a market capitalization of at least US$ 2 billion are automatically considered in the Global 100 starting universe. Market capitalization data is taken each year on October 1st.” The companies are put through four screening phases:

• First Screen: Sustainability Disclosure which “eliminates companies that are not keeping pace with the sustainability reporting trends in their specific industry.”
• Second Screen: The F-Score (The Piotroski F-Score) “consists of nine individual tests. Each test scores one for a pass and zero for a fail.”
• Third Screen: Product Category – “Companies with a GICS Sub-Industry classification equal to “Tobacco” are eliminated. Companies with a GICS Sub-Industry classification equal to “Aerospace & Defence” are revenue tested; if a company derives a majority of its revenue from its Defence business group (e.g. weapons manufacturing), it is eliminated.”
• Fourth Screen: Sanctions. This screening process is reserved for those that made it through the first three phases and looks “at the dollar amount that companies have paid out on a trailing one year basis in sustainability-related fines, penalties or settlements.”

Once through these screening phases they have a short list. “Companies in the Shortlist are then scored on the priority KPIs for their particular GICS Industry. The top overall performers from each GICS Sector are named to the final Global 100, subject to the number of slots reserved for each GICS Sector.” Based on this methodology, the 10 most sustainable Canadian companies in 2015 are:

1. Tim Hortons – Overall rank: 11; Overall score: 68.20%; GICS Industry: Hotels Restaurants & Leisure
2. Teck Resources – Overall rank: 29; Overall score: 65.00%, GICS Industry: Metals & Mining
3. TELUS – Overall rank: 37; Overall score: 62.90%; GICS Industry: Diversified Telecommunication
4. Bombardier – Overall rank: 57; Overall score: 59.20%; GICS Industry: Aerospace & Defense
5. Enbridge – Overall rank: 64; Overall score: 57.60%; GICS Industry: Oil. Gas & Consumable Fuels
6. Sun Life Financial – Overall rank: 67; Overall score: 56.60%; GICS Industry: Insurance
7. The Toronto-Dominion Bank – Overall rank: 76; Overall score: 55.90%; GICS Industry: Banks
8. Celestica – Overall rank: 85; Overall score: 53.90%; GICS Industry: Electronic Equip., Instruments
9. Bank of Montreal – Overall rank: 86; Overall score: 53.70%; GICS Industry: Banks
10. Encana – Overall rank: 90; Overall score: 53.00%; GICS Industry: Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels
