KPMG International “operates as a network of member firms offering audit, tax and advisory services.” Basically, they know what they are talking about when it comes to taxes. When compiling this data they wanted “to offer a comprehensive methodology to assess the numerous and complex factors affecting a company’s tax burden.” They were able to achieve their goal by comparing the “total tax burden faced by companies in each country including: corporate income taxes, property taxes, capital taxes, sales taxes, miscellaneous local business taxes and statutory labor costs (i.e., statutory plan costs and other payroll-based taxes).” By assessing taxes on so many levels they were able to present an overall accurate reflection of the tax situation in each of the 10 countries. According to this data, the 10 most tax competitive countries are:
- Canada – 2012 rank: 1
- United Kingdom – 2012 rank: 3
- Mexico – 2012 rank: 2
- Netherlands – 2012 rank: 4
- United States – 2012 rank: 5
- Australia – 2012 rank: 7
- Germany – 2012 rank: 6
- Japan – 2012 rank: 8
- Italy – 2012 rank: 9
- France – 2012 rank: 10
They found that “Canada has the lowest Total Tax Index at 53.6. In other words, total tax costs in Canada are 46.4 percent lower than in the United States, which has a TTI of 100.0 and represents the benchmark against which all locations are scored.” This information on Canada’s tax competitiveness makes it a more appealing location to both live and do business.
