10 Top Nonprofits According to Online Influence
Social media for nonprofit fundraising is a topic we often cover due to its impact on how charities now engage with their supporters. According to the 2014 Fundraising Technology Trends Study, 80% of fundraisers agreed with the statement that “better technology leads to more effective fundraising”. Technological advancements have expanded reach and made a broader base of (potential) donors more accessible. That is why today we’re sharing with you the 10 top nonprofits according to online influence as published by Top Nonprofits.
Top Nonprofits, was “founded by Craig Van Korlaar as a place to publicly learn from and with the best nonprofit organizations & leaders.” When compiling the ranking they started by looking at thousands of nonprofits to determine if their stats were “competitive enough to be ranked,” and then narrowed it down to 300 selections. Data was then “collected for each nonprofit from all 7 measured criteria (i.e., Facebook Likes, Twitter Followers, Moz Page Rank (homepage), Moz Linking Root Domains, Alexa Rank, Google PageRank, and Charity Navigator Rating).” Each of these nonprofits were given a composite rank, which was “determined by giving 1/3 to social media (Likes and Followers), 1/3 weight to overall website rankings (Alexa, Page Authority, Linking Root Domains, PageRank) and 1/3 to Charity Navigator Rating.” According to this data compilation, the 10 top nonprofits for online influence are:
- National Public Radio (NPR) – Number of Facebook likes: 3,606,813; Number of Twitter followers: 2,331,434; Google ranking: 8; and Charity Navigator: 4 stars.
- Smithsonian Institute – Number of Facebook likes: 285,780; Number of Twitter followers: 1,179,419; Google ranking: 8; and Charity Navigator: 4 stars.
- Human Rights Campaign – Number of Facebook likes: 1,643,343; Number of Twitter followers: 379,271; Google ranking: 7; and Charity Navigator: 4 stars.
- Charity: water – Number of Facebook likes: 290,989; Number of Twitter followers: 1,420,883; Google ranking: 7; and Charity Navigator: 4 stars.
- Creative Commons – Number of Facebook likes: 143,411; Number of Twitter followers: 547,285; Google ranking: 9; and Charity Navigator: 4 stars.
- Kiva – Number of Facebook likes: 211,841; Number of Twitter followers: 535,160; Google ranking: 7; and Charity Navigator: 4 stars.
- World Food Program USA – Number of Facebook likes: 395,739; Number of Twitter followers: 646,348; Google ranking: 8; and Charity Navigator: 4 stars.
- United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) – Number of Facebook likes: 3,168,263; Number of Twitter followers: 2,645,543; Google ranking: 8; and Charity Navigator: 4 stars.
- Human Rights Watch (HRW) – Number of Facebook likes: 875,572; Number of Twitter followers: 1,114,644; Google ranking: 8; and Charity Navigator: 4 stars.
- Feeding America – Number of Facebook likes: 534,315; Number of Twitter followers: 134,462; Google ranking: 7; and Charity Navigator: 4 stars.
Please note that colleges, universities, and individual churches were not included on this list and also if more than one social media page existed, only the page with the most likes/followers was used.
