10 Top Sustainable Companies from the 2013 Global 100 List
CSR business values are important to Miratel and they are a key factor in our every business decision and activity, however, they mean nothing without transparency. As we learned when compiling our first Sustainability report last year, looking at the pure data on the results of your efforts and making them public keeps you on track and makes sure you continue to walk the talk. Being a small business we cannot compete with the resources and reach of larger companies but we are still proud of – and are inspire by – the measures they take. That is why today I’m featuring the top 10 companies from the Global 100: World Leaders in Clean Capitalism list which represents “the most extensive data-driven corporate sustainability assessment in existence, and inclusion is limited to a select group of the top 100 large-cap companies in the world.”
This list was compiled and published by Corporate Knights (CK). CK “is a media, research and financial products company focused on quantifying and animating clean capitalism drivers for decision makers.” The data they collected was primarily from business news conglomerate Bloomberg and “direct engagement with the 350 companies that made the project’s shortlist.” When compiling this 9th edition of the Global 100, CK used a screening process followed by 12 key performance indicators (KPIs): “Energy Productivity (revenue/energy use); Carbon Productivity (revenue/GHG emissions); Water Productivity (revenue/water use); Waste Productivity (revenue/waste productivity); Innovation Capacity (R&D expenses/revenue); Percentage Tax Paid (cash taxes/EBITDA); CEO-Average Worker Pay (CEO compensation/average employee compensation); Pension Fund Status (unfunded liabilities/market capitalization); Safety Performance (fatalities and lost time incidents); Employee Turnover (number of departures/average total employees); Leadership Diversity (female representation on board of directors and executive management); and Clean Capitalism Pay Link (mechanisms that link senior executive pay to clean capitalism targets).”
According to the CK criteria, the top 10 companies in the 2013 Global 100 are:
- Umicore SA – Country: Belgium. Sector: Materials. 2012 ranking: 9
- Natura Cosmeticos SA – Country: Brazil. Sector: Consumer Staples. 2012 ranking: 2
- Statoil ASA – Country: Norway. Sector: Energy. 2012 ranking: 3

- Dassault Systemes SA – Country: France. Sector: Information Technology. 2012 ranking: 32
- Westpac Banking Corp – Country: Australia. Sector: Financials. 2012 ranking: 7
Although Canada did not have any companies that made the top 10, they did tie with the USA with the most companies (10) represented in the Global 100. This is four up from last year when Canada only had six ranking companies. The Canadian companies represented in the 2013 Global 100 were (with ranking): (21) Teck Resources Ltd., mining; (40) Barrick Gold Corp., mining; (57) Canadian National Railway Co., transportation; (60) Telus Corp., telecommunications; (71) Nexen Inc., energy; (79) Enbridge Inc., energy; (81) Suncor Energy Inc., energy; (85) Sun Life Assurance Co. of Canada, financial services; (87) Royal Bank of Canada, financial services; and (88) Cenovus Energy Inc., energy. Hopefully we’ll see more (higher ranking) companies in next year’s report. Kudo’s to all those companies putting their values to work and leading by example.
