12 Most Sustainable Companies According to Latest Survey
Sustainability and CSR business values are very important to Miratel and we like to highlight other companies who share these principles. This is something we’ve explored in posts like the best Corporate Citizens in Canada, the Top Organizations for Employee Engagement, the Greenest Canadian Employers, the Top Diversity Employers in Canada, the Top Canadian CSR Business List, the Canada’s Top Employers for 2013, the top Canadian boards according to gender representation, the Top Canadian Boards According to Visible Minority and Aboriginal Representation, the Top Sustainable Companies, the best corporate citizens list, the top countries for Clean Capitalism, the Green Business Leaders for 2013, the 10 Green Business Leaders, the B Corp Best for the World List, the top foreign corporate citizens in Canada, the most reputable companies, the most visible companies with the best reputation, the top 10 North American retailers for Carbon Productivity, the best green global retailers, the 10 most sustainable Canadian companies, the 10 Most Sustainable Companies, the 10 Most Sustainable Countries and the 10 best corporate citizens. Today we’ll delve into the 12 most sustainable companies from the 20th annual Sustainable Leaders survey published by GlobeScan / SustainAbility.
“The GlobeScan / SustainAbility Surveys offer a unique, collaborative platform that uses research-driven insights, including targeted surveys of the most influential thought leaders in the sustainability arena from over ninety countries, to explore the biggest sustainability challenges.”
To arrive at these results GlobeScan / SustainAbility consulted “[over 887] expert stakeholders from business, government, NGOs, and academia across 87 countries.” They were asked to look at “six attributes of the Extended Leadership framework,” which included vision, goals, offer, transparency, brand and advocacy. Based on these findings, the 12 most sustainable companies are:
- 1) Unilever – Expert respondents identifying the company: 33%
- 2) Patagonia – Expert respondents identifying the company: 9%
- 3) Interface – Expert respondents identifying the company: 7%
- 4) Marks & Spencer – Expert respondents identifying the company: 6%
- 5) Nestlé – Expert respondents identifying the company: 4%
- 5) Natura – Expert respondents identifying the company: 4%
- 5) Nike – Expert respondents identifying the company: 4%
- 5) GE – Expert respondents identifying the company: 4%
- 9) Walmart – Expert respondents identifying the company: 3%
- 9) Puma – Expert respondents identifying the company: 3%
- 9) IKEA – Expert respondents identifying the company: 3%
- 9) Coca Cola – Expert respondents identifying the company: 3%
This is the fourth year in a row that Unilever has earned top honours on the list. The 2014 “results are notably stark – Unilever grows to a 22-point margin over the number-two company, while differences among all others listed have shrunk.” This spike and Unilever’s staying power on the list are not indicative of past year’s findings. Notably missing from this year’s list are Google, IBM, and Novo Nordisk, as they dropped off the 2014 ranking.
It should be noted that this is the first time Ikea is back on the list since 2004. This is likely due to the People & Planet Positive sustainability platform the company launched in 2012. Hopefully this list will inspire more companies to incorporate sustainable practices and values into business decisions and activites.
