Celebrities and Speakers Come Together to Inspire for We Day 2014
I’ve written a lot about the influence of celebrities on philanthropy and nonprofit fundraising as they can inspire others to get involved. This topic has been explored in posts like 10 Most Charitable Celebrities from the 2013 Oscar nominees, the top 20 Celebrity Gone Good Part 1 (and Part 2), the 5 Celebrity Charity Events by Musicians, the 10 Celebrities Doing Interesting Things to Change the World, the 10 most charitable celebrities, the 10 Celebrities Doing Good for Women and Girls, the 10 highest paid actresses and their causes, the 10 highest paid actors and their charities, the TIFF 2013 Celebrities and the Causes They Support Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3, the 10 people from Vanity Fair’s The New Establishment 2013, the 10 Celebrities Using their Fame to Benefit Charitable Causes and Celebrity Selfies – a New Approach to Nonprofit Fundraising. Now entertainers and speakers are joining together to help celebrate and bring attention to We Day.
We Day is “a movement of young people leading local and global change. It serves to get them involved in charitable works and philanthropy.” In fact, We Day is part of a larger family of organizations including Free The Children and Me to We. These organizations work to shift the thoughts of youth form “me” to “we” so they can become leaders in their communities.
In Canada and the UK some 2.3 million youth from 7, 000 schools have been involved in We Day. They have raise “$37 million [going towards] 1,000 causes [and] 9.6 million hours of volunteer hours served.” This shows the magnitude of what We Day has been able to accomplish.
You cannot buy tickets to We Day – those who want to attend the event have to earn their admittance through service. This happens “through the year-long We Act program, schools and groups take on one local and one global action and report back to Free The Children to earn their way to We Day.” This is to encourage sustained participation and action. “In the 2013/2014 school year over 160,000 youth and supporters from 4,000 schools have earned their way to We Day through their actions with We Act.”
National We Day Canada is April 9th 2014 in Ottawa at the Canadian Tire Centre. Speakers and performers include: Kardinal Offishall, Martin Luther King III, Craig & Marc Kielburger, Queen Noor, National Chief Shawn A-in-, Hannah Alper, Molly Burke, Spencer West, Vishal Vijay, Oducado Twins, Simple Plan and JRDN.
Other We Day events for 2014 included: March 7 at Wembley arena in London, March 21st at KeyArena in Seattle and March 26th at the Oracle arena in Oakland California.
We Day is a chance for youth to join together to get inspired and get involved in the world around them. As Gandhi said “be the change that you wish to see in the world,” and that is what We Day is able to accomplish. We Day wants to see a world where people are connected and helping one another in meaningful ways to create change and by motivating youth the effects will last longer. They are setting these students up for a lifetime of awareness which can only serve to better the world.
