The Top Internet and Online Search Rankings in 2011

We normally feature rankings and reports based on CSR business, nonprofit fundraising or Canadian related results but with it being early in 2012 and the holidays still lingering, I thought I’d do something a little lighter today. So with that in mind, I am sharing some online activity rankings from 2011 that I recently came across from Experian Hitwise, a division of Experian Marketing Services. Experian is a company known for delivering best-in-breed data, analytics and platforms into multiple regions around the globe. So without further adieu, here’s a look back at the top searched websites, terms, people and more from the top 500 unfiltered U.S. search terms and U.S. market share of visits for January to November 2011.

Top 10 most searched terms:facebook-logo-collage

  1. Facebook
  2. YouTube
  3. Facebook login
  4. Craigslist
  5. facebook.com
  6. Yahoo
  7. ebay
  8. www.facebook.com
  9. Mapquest
  10. www.yahoo.com

It’s not so surprising that Facebook occupied four of the top ten most searched terms. I was expecting to see Twitter on this list but that will probably change when we see these same results based on 2012 as Twitter’s popularity is growing by leaps and bounds. Twitter was, however, one of the “new” words to make the top 50 search terms along with addicting games, amazon.com, CNN, Chase online, face, Facebook sign up, hotmail, lowes, Pandora and you. The fragmented searches like “face” and “you” are due to changes to the way terms are searched combined with predictive search functionality across major search engines. So by typing “face” you get Facebook and typing “you” brings you to YouTube. I would say that is changing to only having to type the first letter of those particular sites to bring them up so we’ll see how that impacts future reports.

Top 10 most visited websites:

  1. www.facebook.com
  2. www.google.com

  6. www.bing.com
  7. search.yahoo.com
  8. www.gmail.com
  9. mail.live.com
  10. www.msn.com

Again, Facebook took top spot as the most visited website for the second straight year. A little surprised that Twitter did not make this list either but I’m still staying firm on that changing with 2012 results.

Keep in mind that these data results do not include mobile searches or traffic.

Not our deepest moments and some rather strange groupings but these lists are a fun way to look back at the year that was and then wonder why.

Did you know that according to Google, on any given day at least ¼ of the searches have never been searched before?
