Include the #RedThumb Movement in your New Year’s Resolutions
We often promote the CSR business values of other like-minded companies and today we are adding Nissan and NBC to the list of companies like TOMS, those who made the 10 Most LGBT Friendly Brands, the Top 5 North American retailers operate remarkable CSR programs and the online vendors that made our Gifts that Give Back series.
As we welcome 2015 many of us are making resolutions to live a better, healthier and/or more meaningful life and one that ticks all of these boxes (for yourself and others) is to adhere to and support no texting while driving. That includes reading texts as well. We say this because the U.S. Department of Transportation has reported that, “cell phones are involved in 1.6 million auto crashes each year, [which cause] half-million injuries and take 6,000 lives.” This is an issue that demands attention as it has a simple solution. Just stop and Steve Babcock, the founder of Red Thumb Reminder, hopes to help you keep this resolution.
Babcock began the Red Thumb Reminder quest to stop texting and driving all because of his daughter. He was inspired by how she would tie a reminder string on her finger, as to not forget something important. This gave him the idea to paint his thumbnail red, so he would be reminded not to text while driving, and that simple action worked.
Now, car magnet Nissan and broadcasting company NBC have teamed up with Maroon 5 front man and star of “The Voice” Adam Levine to raise awareness of this increasingly important movement. On the December 15th episode of NBC’s “The Voice”, the Grammy winner declared that the next 24 hours would be Red Thumb Day and in honour he urged drivers to put their phones down when behind the wheel. Not just for that day but every day.

Every day of 2015 and beyond and you can easily make this a part of your New Year’s resolution by joining the more than 4,700+ people who have taken the pledge to not text and drive on the Nissan Red Thumb Reminder website. You can share your commitment to the cause by posting an “I took the pledge” message on Facebook, Twitter or by updating your social media profile pictures from their website. You can also use the hashtag #RedThumb to help spread awareness to this issue. In fact, the hashtag had been mentioned more than 24,000 times on social media sites at the time of writing.
Nissan and NBC are working together on this CSR business initiative to reach out to as many people as possible. The message is especially important to younger viewers just starting to drive that may be more susceptible to the idea of texting while driving.
Resolutions can encompass just about anything, and by marking your thumb red with nail polish, a marker or even a elastic or rubber anti-texting-ring you can easily break the nasty and dangerous habit of texting while driving. So, as we begin 2015 think before you get behind the wheel and don’t text and drive – by doing so you’re making the roads a safer place for everyone. #RedThumb
