Least Bribe-Ridden Countries According to Global Corruption Barometer
I regularly write about reports that rank countries on various subjects like the best country to live, smartest countries, the happiest countries, the most peaceful countries, the most sustainable countries, the friendliest countries, the most charitable countries, the most prosperous countries, the best countries for quality of life, the best countries for business, the top countries for life expectancy, the best countries for working women, the best country for world travel & tourism, the best countries for human development, the top countries for Clean Capitalism, the best country for child well-being, the best countries from social progress, the best countries for higher education, the most popular countries, the least corrupt countries, the best countries for paid vacation days and the countries with the best reputation and the best countries for global professionals. Today I am adding to this report list and featuring the least bribe-ridden countries according to the Global Corruption Barometer (GCB) released by Transparency International (TI).
TI has more than 90 chapters worldwide and “is the global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption.” TI also published the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) but the difference between the two is that the CPI relies on expert opinion and the GCB reflects the surveyed views of the general public on “corruption and its impact on their lives” from over 114,000 people in 107 countries.
GCB “examines how corruption features in people’s lives around the world” and also “provides insights into how willing and ready people are to act to stop corruption.” Those surveyed were asked about their experience with – and opinion on – twelve institutions: political parties, parliament and legislature, military, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), media, religious bodies, business and private sector, education system, judiciary, medical and health services, police and public officials and civil servants. Based on the responses compiled in the GCB, the least bribe-ridden countries are:
- 1) Australia – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 1.
- 1) Denmark – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 1.
- 1) Finland – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 1.
- 1) Japan – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 1.
- 5) Spain – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 2.
- 6) Canada – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 3.
- 6) Korea (South) – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 3.
- 6) Malaysia – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 3.
- 6) Maldives – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 3.
- 6) New Zealand – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 3.
- 6) Norway – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 3.
- 6) Portugal – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 3.
- 6) Uruguay – Percentage of people reported paying a bribe to one of the eight services: 3.
Shockingly, one in four people around the world reported having paid a bribe to one of the institutions included in this report. “The majority of people around the world believe that their government is ineffective at fighting corruption and corruption in their country is getting worse.” Hopefully this type of report will increase awareness about corruption and be a force to help combat its presence globally.
