MLB Teams up with SU2C and Prostrate Cancer Foundation in Honour of Father’s Day
The baseball season is in full swing and while fans pack baseball stadiums across North America, our boys of summer are busy both on and off the field. Makes us like baseball even more (if that’s at all possible). CSR business programs are at the core of our business so it is heart-warming to know it is also at the core of our favourite game (hockey is a very close second…we are Canadian after all). So today I thought I’d spotlight the good work the league and the umpires are doing.
MLB has used Mother’s Day as a platform to raise money to combat breast cancer and this Father’s Day today, MLB is teaming up with the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) and Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) to help with prostate cancer awareness and research. In fact “MLB Charities has committed $50,000 to PCF as part of this year’s events and an additional $800,000 — and counting — has already been pledged as part of the 18th annual Prostate Cancer Foundation “Home Run Challenge.“” The Home Run Challenge allows fans to make either a one-time donation or “pledge a dollar amount for each home run hit in 98 selected games, culminating on Father’s Day.” It should be noted that the money raised by the Toronto Blue Jays will go to Prostate Cancer Canada. To help raise more awareness for this cause today, players, managers, coaches and field staff will wear blue wristbands and have blue ribbons on their uniforms to help “keep dad in the game”. Hurry over to MLBCommunity.org and “post your Instagram pictures with #MLBThanksDad and your photo could appear on MLB.com/fathersday. Celebrate the game and your dad.”

Umps Care Annual Online Auction:
In May Umps Care ran their 6th Annual Online Auction, which raised $60,000. This money goes to programs like The BLUE for Kids children’s hospital program that brings “a crew of Major League umpires to the bedside of children with life-threatening illnesses. And they don’t come empty-handed. Each crew brings a Build-A-Bear Workshop®…right to the hospital room!” The BLUE for kids programs lifts the spirits of children and sometimes the home team mascot even tags along!” In fact, they came to Toronto on May 27th to host a Build-A-Bear Workshop at The Hospital for Sick Children. Other programs supported by Umps Care fund include Major League Baseball experiences for children awaiting adoption, and college scholarships for deserving young adults. “Umps Care‘s Charities provides benefactors with ‘Major League’ support by remaining true to our established creed, ‘Helping People is an Easy Call’.”
While most teams – like our Jays Care Foundation – do great charity work in their communities, it’s amazing that MLB and its umpires look beyond geographical boundaries and unite all of baseball in a common (and very noble) goal.
Happy Father’s Day. Play ball.
