SickKids Launches Dreams & Discoveries Winter 2012 Lottery Fundraising Program
Miratel Solutions Inc. has proudly provided lottery fundraising services on behalf of the SickKids Foundation for over six years. Within this time, it’s been a pleasure to witness the tremendous growth and continued success of this important fundraising initiative which supports the vital work and mission of the SickKids Foundation.
Founded in 1973, the Foundation was established to raise valuable funds for The Hospital for Sick Children (also known as SickKids) which is renowned internationally as one of the best paediatric hospitals. Entering its 138th year in April, the hospital has grown from treating 111 patients in 1875, to handling over 100,000 patients each year. The facility itself is more than just a hospital that treats kids who suffer from various illnesses as it also houses:
- The SickKids Research Institute where ground breaking research occurs; and
- The Learning Institute where formal training is given to up-and-coming medical professionals and where patients, parents and families are educated on medical issues related to their child.
Although hospitals in Canada receive government funding, SickKids Foundation could not continue investing in research to help make discoveries or provide the level of care to make families’ dreams come true without the continued support of the public. SickKids Foundation manages many fundraising initiatives in communities across the country. The SickKids Lottery is one of their biggest and most successful fundraising programs and this latest campaign does not disappoint.
This winter’s SickKids Dreams and Discoveries Lottery program will not only continue to help achieve dreams and support discoveries, but will also make some lucky participants winners of fabulous prizes. Included in the prize pool is a $1.5 million Grand Prize and 7 Dream Pack Prizes consisting of:

Experiencing migraines and vomiting, then four-year-old Hugh was brought to The Hospital for Sick Children in May 2011. While Hugh waited in the Emergency Department, a nurse noticed he was squinting to see the television, so he was taken to have his vision and brain examined. His parents were told their son had a brain tumour. Further testing identified it was a rare cancer. The survival rate was 30% and surgery was the best option. Remarkably, SickKids neurosurgeon Dr. Peter Dirks and his team were able to remove 98% of the tumour. Hugh, now five, comes to SickKids monthly for chemotherapy and follows up regularly with a few additional teams. He started senior kindergarten this fall and is able to play and enjoy being a kid again.
It’s incredible that in the past 27 years mortality rates amongst childhood cancer patients have dropped by 50%. It is a true testament to the valuable work that hospitals like SickKids and its Foundation are doing for sick children and their families.
