Top Foreign Corporate Citizens in Canada According to 50 Best Report

Last week I wrote about the 10 top Canadian corporate citizens from Corporate Knights (CK)’s 2014 50 Best Corporate Citizens in Canada report and today I will be writing about the best foreign corporate citizens doing business in Canada from that same report.

CK “is a media, research and financial products company focused on quantifying and animating clean capitalism drivers for decision makers.” CK defines Clean Capitalism as “an economic system in which prices incorporate social, economic and ecological benefits and costs, and actors know the full impacts of their marketplace actions.” Corporate Knights Capital is a “source for objective, data-driven ‘clean capitalism’ ratings for over 2000 companies globally.”

In order to make this list each company had to have substantial operations in Canada but its headquarters had to be located in another country. Furthermore the “companies must earn more than $1 billion/year in Canada, and the parent corporations must have qualified for CK’s 2014 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the world shortlist.” They were also evaluated based on 12 key performance indicators (KPIs): energy productivity, carbon productivity, water productivity, waste productivity, percentage tax paid, leadership diversity, clean capitalism pay link, CEO-to-average worker pay link, safety performance, innovation capacity, employee turnover, and pension fund status. I like to think this lists highlight the strength of doing business in Canada today along with how responsible business practices are just good business. These companies are setting an example of how to be a successful corporate citizen on a global scale.
