Toronto Non Profit spotlight – United Way of Toronto
At Miratel we are extremely proud to own and operate a business in the greater Toronto area, one which holds great stock in our community involvement in addition to supporting clients throughout the nonprofit sector in assisting with their fundraising programs. I wanted to begin a new occasional feature on the blog which shines the spotlight on some local nonprofits and the wonderful work they do within our community. I start this week with one of the the United Way of Toronto as they have set out their fundraising goals for the forthcoming 12 months.
The fundraising goal is set in conjunction with the city of Toronto and a target of $113 million was announced today at the Toronto City Hall which hosted the 2010 United Way employee campaign launch. The luncheon included a singing competition between the City Singers and the TTC Idol Singers with celebrity judges who named Shelly Costa as the winner who will now go on to compete at the battle of the bands competition being hosted on October 21 at the Opera House. That evening also is one of the fundraising events that has been put on the calendar by Toronto Public Services in conjunction with the cause. Mayor David Miller made the following statement:
“The City of Toronto continues to make a tremendous effort to provide core funding to community agencies and help the most vulnerable in our city. Together, we can address the root causes of social problems and strengthen services to our priority neighbourhoods”
The program got a healthy head start the total donation of some $32,000 from the Toronto Professional Firefighters Association and the City ofToronto Administrative, Professional and Supervisory Association Inc. Acting city manager Richard Butts explains the key role that workplace donations will play in raising funds throughout the city:
“I want to commend all members of the Toronto Public Service and participating agencies, boards and commissions for their dedication and generosity in supporting such a worthy cause. Workplace campaigns are a vital part of the fundraising drive and funds raised through these campaigns make a difference to those who need it the most”
The extremely broad benefits that the United Way provide throughout the city are more far-reaching than perhaps many were initially realise. Contributions go towards a variety of objectives such as providing shelter for abused women, helping to assist newcomers with employment training opportunities or retraining the unemployed, a variety of educational and recreational school programs for children targeted as being at risk and many other programs to assist those who may be disadvantaged in other ways. United Way of Toronto has been assisting the city since 1956 and as Toronto grows and diversifies so does the organization. The community impact is vast as the resources of the city be they businesses, individuals, the government or foundation pulled together funding to create better opportunities and a better life for thousands of Torontonians.
