Toronto #WorldPride Month Kicks off with #ProudToPlay
Miratel prides itself on its CSR business initiatives and that includes its Workplace Diversity Plan that defines workplace diversity as “recognizing the variety of characteristics including age, ethnicity, gender, disability, language, religious beliefs, life stages, education, sexual orientation, personality and marital status that we find in our employees and respecting each equally.” We believe that the diversity of employees in any workplace can be one of a company’s greatest strengths.
We proudly support the LGBT community and have celebrated Pride Day in posts like What Does Pride Mean to You?, Pride Toronto is a time to Celebrate Who We Are, Where We’ve Been and Where We Are Going and 4 Nonprofits Advancing the LGBTT2SQI Community. This year, Pride Toronto will be hosting the 1st North American held World Pride Day, “an international celebration incorporating activism, education, and the history and culture of global LGBTTIQQ2SA communities.” LGBTTIQQ2SA represents “a broad array of identities such as, but not limited to, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, two-spirited, and allies.”

YouTube and Google are joining in on the Pride celebrations with the launch of #ProudToPlay. Inspired by the success of its #ProudToLove initiative, #ProudToPlay honours “LGBT athletes, their supporters, as well as the YouTube Creators who stand up for diversity in sports and elsewhere—all of whom help create an equal and inclusive playing field for everyone.” They “applaud the courage and openness of athletes at all levels who have come out and admire their teammates, friends, families, and supporters who are all proving that it doesn’t matter who you are or who you love—what matters is that you put forward your best effort.”
The campaign launched with an original video with various LGBT athletes and allies and highlights organizations working to end anti-LGBT bias in sports, including You Can Play along with other members of the LGBT Sports Coalition.
“Join the conversation by uploading a video talking about what being #ProudToPlay means to you. Over the course of Pride month, we’ll share a collection of videos about the LGBT community and sports on the YouTube Spotlight Channel.”

We often like to shine a light on the initiatives of other companies that share our CSR business values. We’ve delved into this topic before with posts like the best Corporate Citizens in Canada, the Top Organizations for Employee Engagement, the Greenest Canadian Employers, the Top Diversity Employers in Canada, the Top Canadian CSR Business List, the Canada’s Top Employers for 2013, the top Canadian boards according to gender representation, the Top Canadian Boards According to Visible Minority and Aboriginal Representation, the Top Sustainable Companies, the best corporate citizens list, the top countries for Clean Capitalism, the Green Business Leaders for 2013, the 10 Green Business Leaders, the B Corp Best for the World List, the top foreign corporate citizens in Canada, the most reputable companies, the most visible companies with the best reputation, the top 10 North American retailers for Carbon Productivity, the best green global retailers, the 10 most sustainable Canadian companies, the 10 Most Sustainable Companies, the 10 best corporate citizens and the most sustainable business leaders. Today I’m writing about the Cadbury Bicycle Factory.
The Cadbury Bicycle factory is an online interactive campaign that they have run since 2009 and in that time have built almost 25,000 bicycles to help students in Africa get to school. There is no purchase necessary to take part in the interactive “factory,” where the participants get to help build a virtual bike. The bikes they donate are called “Nframa: [and are] a specially designed, one-speed bicycle with a sturdy frame made for the rugged terrain of rural Ghana. It’s called the Nframa – a Ghanaian word for “wind” – because of the mobility and freedom that these bicycles represent.” The simple bike has huge impact to a child who will no longer have to endure a long, tiring walk just to get an education.
As of writing this, their goal is 4000 bikes and with 40 days left only 473 have been completed. Jump on to the Bicycle Factory and help Cadbury meet their goal and help a child commute to school. It’s free and it only takes a few minutes of your time to help change someone’s life.
